Causes and consequences of the severest fire in the Philippines to be discussed at the International Forum in St. Petersburg

The man-made catastrophe occurred in Cavite, the Philippines, earlier this February. It took more than 24 hours to extinguish the fire that broke out in one of the factories belonging to House Technology Industries. Over 100 people were brought to the hospital due to injuries. One worker died over the weekend. Some workers were jumping out of the windows escaping the fire in a three-floor building. At the time of the accident, there were over 5,000 workers on duty.

HTI is one of Cavite Economic Zone’s biggest locators, with total exports of US$775.9 million. The fire cost about US$300 million in total damages.

Causes and lessons learned from this sever accident will be presented by Noel Binag, Executive Director of the Occupational Safety and Health Cente, the Philippines Department of Labour and Employment.

Every year the International Forum on Industrial Safety unites participants from all over the world. For the past several years, the event was attended by industries and government representatives from 35 countries. This jubilee year, the Forum is honored with the presence of its first guest from the Philippines.
